My Story (Condensed)
I discovered and fell in love with the art of “drawing with light,” a.k.a. photography, at a young age. By high school, it had become part of my identity, a comfortable way to interact with other people and the world around me. (And as a bonus, I used it to land me a college scholarship.) Somewhere along the line I drifted away from my beloved camera, and we were estranged for many years. However, life has a way of leading you where you need to be, and it eventually led me back to this first love. There is just something powerful about a photograph that simply can’t be reproduced in any other way (even in this age of AI).
Reportage a.k.a. Documentary a.k.a. Candid Photography
Reportage or documentary photography is the art of candid moments. It is a style that is relaxed and informal. It doesn’t dictate or direct, but simply observes and captures un-staged, authentic moments in time. I don’t tell you how to stand, sit, or smile. You are free to just be you. Real people. Real stories. Real emotions.
Narrative Photography
Narrative photography is photography that tells a story. Although reportage is narrative, here I’ll use the term narrative to refer to a style where the photographer takes a more active role in creating the story. I approach this style as a collaborative process where you and I work together to craft the narrative. What’s the context? What’s the mood? What’s the message we want to convey? How do we accomplish that? Carefully posed? Free flowing? Both? You don’t have to have all the answers, but neither do I. We figure it out together, each giving input and direction. Then, it is up to me to capture it all with the camera!
Fine Art Photography
Fine art photography is simply artistic expression through photographs. One of the things I love about it is that there are no hard and fast rules. You are free to dream, experiment, create with purpose, or see where the camera takes you. Whether it be something bold, adventurous, whimsical, serene, or mythical, my goals are two-fold: experience joy in the journey, and create something worth putting in a place of honor on the wall.
